Desktop
Buddy Lists: gaim, skype, gnomemeeting, gabber, irc, etc.. all have separate buddy list windows.
Address books: Evolution, skype, gaim, ifolder, kmail etc all have separate addressbooks.
Timezone info, Location: Each app that implements “location” and timezone does it on its own stuff.
Set Status: Each app has its own away/busy/offline setting you need to set when you go “away” - thus usually you never use them since it is a pain.
A common addressbook. Shaver once said it should be a local ldap-server which every app uses.
Common location info - could plug a GPS etc to it if available to make it automatic even.
Common online status setting for the desktop. Setting busy should suppress IM popups, Skype and Gnomemeeting calls, email notifications, all but the “warning! you run out of battery” alerts. For example your DVD player could set you “busy” automatically so messages dont pop up in front of it etc.
Common “buddy list” for all online presence info. See

There are several projects underway aiming this, but just wanted to write this stuff down here so we get an idea what we are designing. :)
Display calibration settings. At least the simple “adjust brightness and contrast” can do a lot of good even if you dont even touch colors at all. Full color calibration wouldnt hurt either thouhg.
