Now, the Linux Desktop
- What is wrong with the current state?
- Almost every application own set of icons.
- People run apps coming from various projects –
OpenOffice.org,
Firefox,
GNOME,
KDE...
- Many free software applications also run on other systems such as MS Windows and Mac OS X (Gaim, Gimp, Inkscape).
Now, the GNOME Desktop
- What's wrong with Gnome Icon Theme?
- Mime type icons use text labels.
- Mime type icons are claiming to be 48x48px but aren't.
- Mime type icons use a document sheet metaphor for things that aren't documents (video, sound, etc).
- More and more mime type additions & requests.
- Icons not created for all sizes, scaling issues.
New Icon Theme
New Icon Theme
- New Icon Theme? Are you Nuts?
New Icon Theme
There are several things that make it / will make it easier than starting completely from scratch.
- We have a proper style guide now.
- Freedesktop.org generic naming scheme.
- Grouping / Type fallback.
- Icon naming tools, inheritance.
- Lots of assets to reuse and build upon.
Icon Naming
Standard Names
- Some examples
- dialog-close
- accessories-calculator
- et cetera...
- Currently proposed on FD.o's XDG list for discussion
